Bar is a town of long and rich history,
almost as old as the records in its mysteriously gnarled olive tree trunks.
In historic sources it is for the first time mentioned in IX century
under the name of Antibareos.Roman sources, which were still to come,
speak of it as of Antibarum, and those Slavonic as of Bar.
In historic sense of the word the very mention of the Old Town
of Bar is so closely related to speaking about the very origins of
the Montenegrin state: this is the area which has been attached for
nearly ten centuries to the legend of Vladimir and Kosara, probably
one of the oldest and most romantic legends with the South Slavs. Also,
it is here that the first Montenegrin kings were crowned.
Apart from this, Bar was the first to see the appearance of the
first literary work with South Slavic peoples – Chronicles of
the Doclean Priest, and is home to one of the oldest olive trees in
Europe, which is more than 2.000 years old.
Today, Bar is a modern seaside town, the town adorned in Mediterranean
vegitation and one of the sunniest regions in Europe. Numerous tourist
attractions across its area and those in its immediate surroundings,
as well as the fact that it boasts a big and modern harbour, make it
the biggest and the most influential centre in this part of the Adriatic.
